Special Project Launch

 

A special project was launched for teachers last Thursday morning. Teachers were treated to breakfast as they viewed the new literacy boxes that have been created to support them in the classroom. These boxes contain a number of quality picture books that can be used to teach reading strategies. The big books have also been relocated to the library and are now visible not only to teachers but to students. It was great to see some students reading a big book together during their library session. Parents/carers are welcome to visit the Inspire centre at any time and borrow or read with their children.

At Amaroo school we acknowlege the traditional custodians of the land on which the school sits, the Ngunnawal people and pay our respects to the elders both past, present and future.
We are excited to have a new rug in the library which reflects Aboriginal and Torres Strait heritage and the value we place on story telling. We look forward to seeing our students engage with the images as they enjoy their library visits.

Parents/carers are welcome to come and read with their children between 3-4pm on Wednesday afternoons. I can set up a borrower record for any parents/carers who would like to borrow books under their own name. Please see Mrs Otten if you would like to borrow books in addition to those your children borrow.

ANZAC day

As ANZAC day falls during our 2 week break, we have been reading a special book in library sessions this week. "My Grandad marches on ANZAC day." by Catriona Hoy. Students in years 4-6 have been making text-to-world connections and writing these on the leaves of poppies. These will be on display in the library until early term 2. We also have a beautiful ANZAC day display which highlights some of the great books we have in the library.

Author of the month

Our April author of the month is Ursula Dubosarsky. She is an Australian author who lives in Sydney.
We have many of her books in the Inspire centre.
      

  
 Her newest book 'Brindabella' will soon be available for borrowing. This is a story about a boy called Pender and a kangaroo called Brindabella, about how they became friends, and all the things that happened to them because of it.

Pender and his father live in an old house made of honey-coloured stone in the bush by the river, with only the company of his father's paintings and the loyal dog, Billy-Bob. Then, on one winter morning, a gunshot amongst the trees changes everything.

When Pender rescues Brindabella from the pouch of her murdered mother, an unusual friendship blossoms between the lonely boy and the orphaned joey. But Brindabella is no ordinary kangaroo. And though Pender has saved her life, the untameable wildness of the bush--and freedom--call to her...

World Poetry Day - March 21

Students have been reading lots of poetry books that have been displayed under the POET-TREE. 

 

Many students have also created their own poems using the magazine words displayed on the table.

 

Book Fair

Thank you for visiting the book fair last week. It was great to see so many parents/carers browsing the book fair. Our final sales total was $6,000 which means we receive $1,800 of free books from Scholastic books to put in our library.

Wednesday 21 March is World Poetry Day

There will be a special poet-tree display in the Inspire centre to celebrate. Come and see the amazing poetry books we have in our library. There will be a special poetry creation station set up on the tables. You can create a poem using random words cut out of magazines. We can't wait to read what you create.
